Christoper Groves Presents
Synthesizing Genres in Painting
By drawing upon the knowledge, mark-making, and processes of multiple artistic genres, painters can create a more personal and authentic form of expression. This synthesis allows for deeper understanding and more comprehensive solutions in one’s work. It is an approach that honors the past while transforming it—creating art that speaks to the present.

Announcing -A Three Day - Oil Painting Studio Workshop with Christopher Groves
“Abstracting the Landscape” Traditional and Contemporary
This class will merge the knowledge of the fundamentals of traditional landscape painting as a foundation, combined with the understanding of the basic principles and elements of contemporary and abstract painting in order to loosen up. Pushing one’s landscape paintings with a variety of mediums and tools as a way to control and explore beyond the basics, as well as heavy analysis on modifying design and composition to push outside the obvious. Beginning with emphasis on mark-making, color theory, color notes, and sketches, and ending with demonstrations and discussions on the pursuit and struggles of a larger scale painting. We will also explore the varieties found within both the traditional and modern color palettes. Experimenting with Cold Wax Medium as an addition to oil paint will be covered in order to add texture, layering and mark making.
"The understanding of fundamental artistic skills can allow one to capture the essence of the landscape by simplification of color, shape, and pattern; in turn, redefining the idea and presentation of reality.”

Gorgeous Grays: The Secret for Faster Growth and Beautiful Paintings
Learning to use the magic of grays is the key to unlocking the principles of design, values, shapes and color harmony. The one common element that weaves through learning the elements of successful paintings is using the gorgeous grays to better see the design, shapes, and values, and then creating a color harmony with scintillating color shifts. Did you know that buyers see design and shapes before color? Why are palettes in grays and why in art schools must students begin only working in grays? Color hides the basic elements of a great painting, yet harmonious colors and temperature brings the sizzle. Once you learn to see in gorgeous grays it all comes together much easier and faster. As a recovering lawyer turned artist Bill has the ability to delightfully present and simplify in a fun way complex and obtuse art language, a fact that has made him a perennial favorite on the main stage of the annual Plein Air Conference & Expo. In addition, as a constant researcher of the neuroscience of faster and better learning, he will present ideas that make it easier and faster for you to learn, and enjoy the process more. In addition, he will teach his new ways of mixing color so values are dead-on in color, the biggest issue for learning artists. It’s a confidence building super boost.
